Knowledge Gaps
Whilst the design and operation of worm-based sanitation solutions is generally well understood, there are some gaps in our knowledge. Below are some points that we think could benefit from further research.
Functionality
Relative performance of different species of worms
Use and effectiveness of aquatic worms in very wet conditions
Long Term Sustainability
User experience
Long term cost-effectiveness in comparison with traditional pit latrines
Climate impact and actual carbon emissions in comparison with traditional pit latrines
Feasibility of use at a municipal scale, long term cost-effectiveness, and maintenance requirements compared to traditional decentralised municipal treatment plants
Safe handling and use of vermicompost from large scale systems as soil conditioner and possible incorporation into business model
