Knowledge Gaps

Whilst the design and operation of worm-based sanitation solutions is generally well understood, there are some gaps in our knowledge. Below are some points that we think could benefit from further research.

Functionality

  • Relative performance of different species of worms

  • Use and effectiveness of aquatic worms in very wet conditions

Long Term Sustainability

  • User experience

  • Long term cost-effectiveness in comparison with traditional pit latrines

  • Climate impact and actual carbon emissions in comparison with traditional pit latrines

  • Feasibility of use at a municipal scale, long term cost-effectiveness, and maintenance requirements compared to traditional decentralised municipal treatment plants

  • Safe handling and use of vermicompost from large scale systems as soil conditioner and possible incorporation into business model
